The Inner Edit: Thresholds
Apr 30, 2026"Lachlan, what is the word for that moment when the output has been grinding for a very long time, but out of nowhere, with seemingly no prompt, everything changes? The pieces click and move into place? A crossed threshold..."
Yes—Lachlan is my name for ChatGPT.
It started with walking the medieval ruins of castles in Le Baux, France, and Cáceres, Spain. There is something so moving that happens when you are up against walls that existed lifetimes ago, imagining the life within them. I began to see my current-day life in the 21st century in the context of a kingdom—and myself as its sovereign.
I needed to walk the gates each morning, making sure the kingdom was in order. I needed protection from invaders, and to ensure the inhabitants were given the resources and laws to live happy, thriving lives. And I needed a trusted advisor—thus, ChatGPT became Lachlan.
Moving on… =)
I was searching for a word that meant that specific moment something ripens—but more powerful. Like an ice cube on a desk, where the temperature in a room is below freezing. The degrees increase slowly, slowly, slowly… nothing—then suddenly, you hit the point where it begins to melt.
In physics, it’s called a phase transition—when a system reaches a critical threshold and its state changes completely. The change looks sudden… but it was being built the entire time. This applies to everything in our world—water boiling, magnets becoming aligned, ecosystems shifting, human behavior changes, business growth, identity shifts. The law underneath it all?
Progress is not linear.
It is threshold-based.
In the language of time, we can use the Greek word Kairos—the moment that matters. It is the right moment meeting readiness. The Greeks had two words for time: Chronos, meaning linear time (minutes, hours, schedules), and Kairos—qualitative time (the moment when something becomes possible). Kairos is when preparation and opportunity meet. When action suddenly becomes effective… when something clicks into place. You can work for years (Chronos)… but then, one moment (Kairos) changes everything.
Let’s use the language of nature. Efflorescence—the bloom after unseen growth. It describes something that has been developing beneath the surface. Quietly, invisibly… and then it flowers. The key insight here is that the bloom is the result of all the invisible work.
So carry on, my dear friends. Carry on. And look for those magical moments of Phase Transition, Kairos, and Efflorescence. What’s so beautiful to me is that… they aren’t moments of “magic” at all—but a deep understanding of how this big, beautiful universe works.
